Today I woke up @ 4:30 am so I had some more extra time in getting my emails checked before getting ready for work. There were more people @ work today which made it nice. I’m getting lots of filing done @ work. There will be a time in the near future when all of the files will completely disappear & they will all be online & the file room will be empty. That means my role will change to something else which I am really looking forward to. I’ve had a very good day for today. Yay!

Dear Tara Rankin,

I am finally 15! I can’t believe it! I am the birthday girl today! I am on my way to Aunt Baiba’s. I am so excited! I want to see where she lives. I got a bookmark from Grace. I am waiting to go on the ferry. Aunt Baiba has 24 cats! There was a delay with the taxi but we made it ok. There is a cat that came to our apt last night and came again today. He is nice and lovable. We are getting on now.

Wednesday May 8, 2024

Today I woke up @ 4:20 am. I was able to check my emails a bit earlier. At work one of my coworkers brought in some Tim Bits from Tim Hortons which really made my day. I was the only other person in my department for a much quieter morning. After lunch I had a lovely zoom meeting with two people from Curiko for my poetry. We are going to get my couplet poems illustrated for my couplet poems book. And I have other Haiku poems that need illustration as well. Things are awesome!

Tuesday June 23, 1992

Dear Tara Rankin,

4 days until my birthday. Yesterday I had a choir concert. It was ok. Grace got her ears pierced. She looks nice. I did not do anything today. I stayed home and packed for Aunt Baiba’s. I am staying for a month.

CREATIVE NONFICTION PROMPT

Mary Ruefle’s essay “My Search Among the Birds” takes the form of short diary entries, all relating to birds. The entries each begin with a date and range from simple descriptions (“I saw a bird in the bushes near Dairy Queen. It looked thin to me.”) to more inward reflections (“Although all poets aspire to be birds, no bird aspires to be a poet.”). This week, try taking daily notes on a specific subject that will allow you to observe and be introspective. It could be anything: cellphones, airplanes, mice, socks. See where this act of sustained attention leads you, and craft your entries into an essay.

Tuesday May 7, 2024

Today my bladder woke me up @ 4:12 am. I’ve had a major case of cabin fever & have been itching to get out. After my mother got back from the dentist my mother & I went to Value Village after lunch. I found a painting & a hat for myself. We walked all the way back home. It was a lovely 40 minute walk back. Now that I am home I can take the time to just chill out & relax for the rest of the day. I have a book with 30 pages left to read. I am done with computer stuff for today.

Saturday June 20, 1992

Dear Tara Rankin,

7 days or one week from today until my birthday. Yesterday I went to the office with my mommy. For my birthday I got a book called The Phantom Of The Opera. I like it very much. Today I went to Grandville Island.

FICTION PROMPT
February 26 is National Tell a Fairy Tale Day. To honor the occasion, try writing your own fairy tale with a contemporary twist. If you need some inspiration, examples abound of stories influenced by the magical logic and archetypes of fairy tales. In Robert Coover’s “The Frog Prince,” for example, a woman marries a frog and kissing him offers her a hallucinogenic experience. The anthology My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales (Penguin Books, 2010), edited by Kate Bernheimer with Carmen Giménez Smith, is filled with diverse approaches to the retelling of classic fairy tales. What elements of modern life or progressive point of view will you incorporate into your tale?

Monday May 6, 2024

Today my bladder woke my up @ 5:20 am & was in the shower by 5:37 am. I checked all of my emails plus posted to social media plus worked on my I Can’t Work Mondays book. Because I am still sick with a cold I did not meet with my poetry coach today. It is for next Monday instead. So I’ve also been drinking some homemade ginger tea & watching McDonald & Dodds on PBS that have been PVR’d. I have had a bad cough & I am shivering. I am trying to just relax & get myself better so I can go to work on Wednesday. I am really super tired for today.

Wednesday June 17, 1992

Dear Tara Rankin,

10 days until my 15th birthday. Today my hair got trimmed 4 inches. I went downtown with Grace. When we came home, we rushed for the sky-train. I got on and she stayed there. I was so scared! We met again at the Main Station. I was so relieved! Grace and I hugged and she was so glad also. On Mon. I didn’t write my exam in math. It was cancelled. I did all that studying for nothing. The English exam was easy and the science was ok. I am going to work on my family tree tomorrow.

POETRY PROMPT

Many cultures have expressions to describe the phenomenon of sunshowers. In Japan, a sunshower is said to mean that foxes are getting married; in Iran, that a wolf is giving birth; and in the United States, that the devil is beating his wife. In her poem “Sunshower,” Natalie Shapero uses this American expression as a refrain and twists it in a way that critiques both the saying and the culture it represents. Using Shapero’s poem as a model, try taking one of the many cultural expressions for a sunshower and use it as a refrain for a poem. Begin with the words: “Some people say…”
