Why I can’t trust you:
You can’t keep things to yourselves
You are all gossips.

Keeping lips zipped tight, secure

Essential Sustenance

We in the twenty-first century think we are the first to be so busy—busy with making money or being students or caring for children, parents, or grandchildren. When we are so busy taking care of people and issues right in front of us, how do we remember to make time to enrich our personal relationship with God? St. Francis, in his own busy life of working, teaching, and writing, was always aware of his need for regular prayer—he would not forget. For Francis, prayer was essential sustenance. His guide was Jesus himself, who invites us through his actions and words to engage in deep dialogue with God. How inviting it is to remember that God calls each of us by name and that our name is written on the palm of his hand.

Dear Tara Rankin,

We stopped off in Fargo at the Motel 6 inn. We had supper at the Taco Bell. I had the Steak Burito. For Breakfast today we went to Sandel’s. I had hash browns, scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast and milk. We stopped in Billings Montana and stayed in the same hotel as yesterday. For supper we went to King’s table buffet. I can’t remember the supper part but for desert I had vanilla ice-cream and hot fudge on it.
Love,

sophrosyne

PRONUNCIATION: (suh-FROZ-uh-nee)

MEANING: noun: Soundness of mind, as expressed in moderation, self-control, and prudence.

ETYMOLOGY: From Greek sophrosyne, from sophron (of sound mind, prudent). Earliest documented use: 1889.

USAGE: “In this sense, sophrosyne seems to be the key to the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, not only to break the vicious cycle of violence that holds the two sides captive but also to support the idea of nonviolent resistance.” Carlos Fraenkel; Teaching Plato in Palestine; Dissent (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); Spring 2007.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: You can safely assume that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do. -Anne Lamott, writer (b. 10 Apr 1954)
